A Risky Opinion
Here’s a little rant about Risk; it might be a great, timeless, enjoyable way to spend a few hours. But in my two experiences, it brings out the worst in people.
I’m not referring to any cutthroat alliance building and betrayals. That’s part and parcel of the game, just like it is in Diplomacy or the 4X genre. The shitty behavior Risk prompts is the remaining players wanting to force the defeated players, the losers of the game, to sit and keep watching. As if Risk is a great spectator sport. “You can’t leave now! I’m going to crush Ben at Kamchatka!” No one cares, my dudes. Least of all the three of us no longer playing. We can go get a beer and not come back, right? That’s cool?
Why every gamer who loves playing Risk wants to also demand an audience for what really boils down to childish tactics and rolling fistfulls of dice is beyond me. But don’t take my word for it. Listen to the wisdom of Lister.
